Our Purpose

The El Salvador Health Mission provides the opportunity for PeaceHealth and the CSJP Community, through volunteer participation of employees and CSJP affiliates, to bring human and material resources to people in a country with inadequate health care.
 

The compelling motivation for the project is the reality that overwhelming numbers of persons living in unemployment and poverty - particularly those persons living in rural areas - have little or no access to the limited and El Salvadoran health services provided by the government and by non-governmental organizations.

Another compelling motivation for this project is what it does for PeaceHealth and its participants. The champions for the project believe it enriches the soul of our organization by deepening our own self-realization of the PeaceHealth Mission. It does so in a social and historical context that is not available in our own regions, or indeed in our own country. El Salvador's social and historical context confronts our project volunteers with fundamental moral issues such as war, poverty, justice and faith. Intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually, volunteers gain a deeper and richer understanding of the PeaceHealth Mission. This deeper understanding in turn enriches the work in our own regions and assists in defining and implementing opportunities to further our Mission with the underserved in our service areas.

This project also strengthens the working partnership between PeaceHealth and the CSJP Community. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace have a historical relationship with El Salvador and the SCJP Community's prior ministry in the country provides advantages of knowing the area and having established contacts with organizations there.

Additionally, the El Salvador Health Mission works to formalize a mechanism to provide medical equipment and supplies to meet the health needs of the extreme poor in El Salvador.
