El Salvador Eye Surgery Brigade, April 19-28, 2008

Jane Halsey, PeaceHealth System Office

Ten volunteers, two Sisters, one PazSalud staff member, and one local physician set out to accomplish the Eye Surgery Brigade to Hospital Saldana, Panchimalco, El Salvador in late April 2008. Much prep work had already been done. Volunteers had signed on, travel and hotel reservations were made, arrangements were made with a local hospital to use their facility, supplies were amassed and packed in Rubbermaid tubs for transport, and a brigade of optometrists had been to the area several weeks prior to examine and schedule fifty patients for cataract surgery. All was set.

This group of individuals, mostly strangers to each other, came together to donate their time and skills and in no time were functioning as if they had been co-workers for years. Each person used her/his talents to the utmost…and along the way came to have a memorable, fun, and rewarding experience (more on the fun part later). My job, as brigade photojournalist, was to capture memories in pixels. What an honor to watch the week of activities unfold.
