The Wonderfully Patient Patients

During the week, we cared for 182 patients. They were absolutely wonderful. What dear and precious people---so grateful and accommodating---willing to tolerate more than is our standard. Many waited in line for hours in the heat of the day to be seen. Surgical patients received local anesthesia only --- no additional IV sedation was done. Patients held still for the entire 45-60 minutes needed to perform the surgery. The surgical care, though provided by well-trained individuals lacked some of the "refinements" we are used to in the States.

The procedure itself was done without aid of ultrasound technology---a tool ophthalmologists routinely use to liquefy and remove the clouded lens. Therefore, surgery and recovery times were longer.

EyeglassesAlthough our primary goal was eye cataract surgery, we saw scores of people wanting eye exams. Lydia was busy all day every day. We gave out dry eye drops, reading glasses, and sunglasses galore. We diagnosed several cases of glaucoma that required a referral for follow-up care. Additionally, we encountered two sad cases of blindness in young men for which there was no cure. This was especially disheartening knowing that, for the poor, blindness makes daily survival even more difficult.

A number of patients originally scheduled for surgery cancelled or just "did not show" on the day of surgery. It was learned that a rumor had gone around the community telling people that the surgery was done by physically removing the eyeball and then re-inserting it once the procedure was complete! But as Sr. Eleanor told us "be flexible---that's the key." And we were. In place of the cancellations, some additional patients needing cataract surgery were found thanks to Dr. Del Cid's diligence and community ties. Additionally, more people were afforded eye examinations.

Smiles and Hugs

The overall atmosphere was one of serious work yet smiles abounded. Patients and staff let us know how very much they appreciated our efforts with hugs, smiles, and expressions of gratitude.
