Brigada de Ojos ~ the Brigade of Eyes -- or in the astute phrasing of one of our surgeons Vincent Matteucci, Eyeballs Are Us -- began for most of us in a Seattle airport hotel. Just days before, our coordinators had arranged for the arrival of a newly harvested cornea, to be cared for like an egg in a nest all the way to a poignantly unique hospital and a recipient in San Salvador.

The theme that emerged very quickly for me is reflected in many of my photos: Eyes
Eyes reach out.
They can be blind or seeing.
They can pull you in or close you out.
Eyes can be clouded or clear.
They can be sky blue as Sr. Eleanor's or dark as a Salvadoran night.
They laugh. They cry.
They hide, they reveal. They are windows. They are mirrors. They are pools.
Eyes see beauty. Eyes see horrors.
They dance,
they dream.
Eyes can hurt, and eyes can heal.
